UK guard Dominique Hawkins says Ulis seems more aggressive in practice this fall, and more inclined to attack the rim.He is disinclined to revisit what might have been against Wisconsin.“I really don’t have a thought on that,” Ulis said. “That was last year. That was in the past. We really wanted to win that game, but we didn’t. We’re not blaming it on the (Harrison) twins. A lot of people made mistakes in that game. So we’ve got to move on.“I wanted to play, of course, but you never know what’s going to happen. For all of his competitive success and recruiting bounty, Coach Cal sometimes seems out of touch with a constituency that prizes championships far above individual egos, sibling sensibilities or the NBA draft. That Calipari’s Wildcats committed three straight shot-clock violations in an NCAA semifinal is almost inexplicable. If they did so with their best guards on the bench because of misguided loyalties, that could be construed as dereliction of coaching duty.Yet there was at least one mitigating circumstance that may have influenced Calipari’s thinking last spring: Tyler Ulis was not whole. Though he was generally the fastest man on the floor, Ulis spent much of his freshman year limited by painful shin splints, so much so that in reviewing video of those games, “I felt I looked very slow,” he said.“Last year was tough,” Ulis said Wednesday afternoon. “Coming into halftime, I could barely walk. I just had to play through it, gut it out. It helped me out that we had 10 guys who played a lot of minutes.”UK’s Poythress at ’75 percent’ healthUlis averaged 23.8 minutes per game as the point guard on Calipari’s second platoon, leading the Wildcats in three-point percentage (42.9 percent) and ranking third nationally in assist/turnover ratio (3.6-1). Since his program height of 5-foot-9 appears to have been calculated with platform shoes, Ulis was sometimes a defensive liability against bigger guards. Still, his dazzling quickness and consistently sound decisions caused season-long debate about UK’s point guard pecking order. With Andrew Harrison now plying his trade in the pros, Calipari’s backcourt loyalties are no longer divided. His unambiguous message during Wednesday’s preseason media day is that this year’s Kentucky team will have Tyler Ulis at the controls, both on and off the court.“We’re walking into a situation where I’m asking Tyler to do stuff that’s probably not fair,” Calipari said. “I need (him) to be a coach, too. … They all look at him when he tells them to do stuff. They listen, and that’s really powerful for me as a coach, because there will be times in huddles and I’ll say, ‘Tyler, what do you think we should be doing?’ And he’ll say, ‘Let’s do this.’ (And) They’ll make it work because it came from him versus me.”Kentucky Basketball | Takeaways from John Calipari’s appearance at Cats’ media dayDespite his diminutive stature and his limited experience at the college level, Ulis is unquestionably the leader on this Kentucky team. Though UK players generally defer to Alex Poythress because of his seniority, it is Ulis who will set the tone and run the show this season.“At my position,” he said, “you have to lead the team.”Yet to be seen is whether Ulis’ teammates can keep pace with their point guard now that his legs have healed.“There are a lot of gears you haven’t seen from Tyler Ulis,” junior forward Marcus Lee said Wednesday.“I feel,” said freshman forward Skal Labissiere, “like he’s everywhere at once.”Sign up to get more like this free in your inbox Session ID: 2020-09-18:fdf8d092ab1fa51a96e3e9c4 Player ID: videojs-brightcove-player-444388-4557844665001 OK Close Modal DialogCaption Settings DialogBeginning of dialog window. Former Lady Cougar Comer’s Lady Senators remain in control of TCCAA

first_imgFormer Campbell High Lady Cougar Haley Comer (# 32) tallied 6 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals, an assist and a block in Walter State’s conference win on Saturday against Volunteer State.MORRISTOWN, Tenn. — Walters State’s Lady Senators held on to first place in the Tennessee Community College Athletic Association by rolling past Volunteer State, 87-62, behind a career game Saturday by Blayre Shultz at ‘Z’ Buda Gymnasium.Shultz tied the Walters State record with seven three-pointers and poured through 27 points as the Lady Senators upped their league mark to 13-2. Coach Dave Kragel’s club is now 16-9 for the season. It was Alumni Day and Shultz had a great game before a large contingent of former players for both the Lady Senators and Senators. She split her points almost evenly by scoring 13 in the first half and adding 14 in the second.Shultz had plenty of scoring help from post players Paris Mullins and Jamya Rogers. Mullins scored Walters State’s first 10 points and finished with 19 while Rogers chipped in 17.Volunteer State, which saw its record dip to 4-17 and 3-11 in league play, was led by Anaya Martin with 15. Alex McFarlin added 14 and Xavia Williams 12.The Lady Senators were in control and never trailed, but couldn’t put the game away. They led by only 10 with 4:41 left in the game before pulling away down the stretch.Kragel said, “This was just a really good win for us today.“I thought Blayre shot the ball extremely well for us and I really thought Paris played well for us. She did a much better job in the post,” the coach added.Kragel went on to say, “We did some things well as a team but we still have to do a better job of getting to their shooters. We got to them, but we didn’t do it quick enough.“I think our team continues to get better,” he said. “We’ve gotten better in the last few weeks. I don’t know if we’re doing it quick enough, but we’ll find out when we go to Memphis next weekend. That will be a tough road trip and we’ll have to be ready to play.”Kragel also talked about seeing so many of his former players in attendance. “It was really nice. There were people here that played on my very first team here and people here from last year’s team. I don’t know exactly how many were here but it was really neat to see them and get to chat with them.”The Lady Senators are one game up in the loss column over both Chattanooga State and Cleveland State with three games remaining.Walters State hit 35 of 76 from the floor for 46.1 percent and made 12 of 26 behind the three-point line. Vol State was 20-55 for 36.4 percent and hit 11 of 29 behind the arc.Mullins pulled down 10 rebounds to propel the Lady Senators to a 34-30 advantage. Williams grabbed a dozen stray shots for the Lady Pioneers and Dynia Douglas had 10.Alexis Thrice helped the victory as she scored seven points, had six assists and four steals. After Mullins’ big start put the home team in front 10-2, the Lady Pioneers battled back within 10-7. Vertonia Bady knocked down a trey for Walters and Shultz added another after two foul shots by Douglas.Baskets by Kiera Hill, Shultz and Quentarra Mitchell gave the Lady Senators a 33-17 lead at the first rest stop.Haley Comer scored to start the second frame, Rogers hit a basket and added a free throw and Shultz added a triple as the lead grew to 10 at 30-20. Vol State then battled back within three before Thrice popped in a three to give Walters State a 40-34 lead at intermission.Thrice’s second three of the game gave the winners a 50-36 spread, but the visitors chipped away and got within 52-43. Shultz knocked down three straight triples and Rogers added a basket in the final 3:21 of the third and the Lady Senators took a 63-47 margin to the final 10 minutes.Midway of the final frame, Volunteer State scored eight straight to close within 67-58. Comer hit a foul shot and Mullins scored before Williams’ basket got the margin down to 10 with 4:41 left. That was the final basket for the Lady Pioneers as the home team closed it out with a 17-2 spree to win going away.NEXT UPWalters State gets a week off before a road match-up against TCCAA rival Southwest Tennessee next Saturday. Tottenham manager dismissed as ‘bigmouth’ – Mourinho ‘arrogance’ and ‘imagination’ slammed

first_imgJose Mourinho conducted an interview with Marca for the Spanish newspaper’s Saturday edition, and on the whole it was very mild. More fireworks would usually be expected from the combination, but the Tottenham boss didn’t say anything controversial about his current club or players, and he didn’t even send any digs towards Manchester United.Still, he’s managed to anger the Catalan media.Mourinho did talk about his time at Real Madrid, and, as he sees it, how he stopped Barcelona’s dominance in Spanish football.Well, Lluis Mascaro is having none of it. In a column for Catalan newspaper Sport he’s called the Tottenham manager a ‘bigmouth’, adding it’s always been the case and it always will be.His ‘arrogance’ hasn’t mellowed in recent years, despite his relative lack of success. Therefore, it’s claimed Mourinho is living on past glories, and trying to make them seem more than they were. The Sport journalist believes that during the Marca interview, Mourinho boasted of things he never actually achieved, such as ‘ending Barca’s hegemony’: ‘Florentino Perez signed Mourinho in the summer of 2010 to try to stop the ‘Pep Team’. And not only did he not succeed, but he had the most appalling ridicule, with humiliations such as the 5-0 at the Bernabeu and the elimination in the semifinals of the Champions League (with an exhibition by Messi)’Mourinho ‘clearly lost’ his battle with Pep Guardiola, according to Sport, and ‘at most’ all he achieved was turning El Clasico matches into a nasty war, on and off the pitch.Anything else, is a figment of his ‘imagination’.by Taboolaby TaboolaSponsored LinksSponsored LinksPromoted LinksPromoted LinksTrending TodayForge of Empires – Free Online GameDon’t Play This Game, it’s Addictive.Forge of Empires – Free Online GameUndo聽多多 Hearmore.asia1969年前出生的香港居民現可免費試戴頂尖的歐洲助聽器聽多多 Hearmore.asiaUndoHero WarsGetting this Treasure is impossible! Chkalovs 1937 flight celebrated at Pearson Air Museum

first_img Valery Chkalov died in a crash while test-piloting a plane in 1938.Evan Petcoff and his family drove from their home in Walnut Grove to see a record-setting Russian airplane 75 years ago, and the 14-year-old boy was more than impressed. He was inspired.Petcoff wasn’t able to catch a glimpse of the aviators following their unexpected arrival at Vancouver’s Pearson Field on June 20, 1937. Still, their achievement had something to do with how Petcoff wound up as a member of an American bomber crew during World War II.“I was a B-29 flight engineer,” Petcoff said Wednesday morning after placing a flower at the Transpolar Flight Monument. “I think (the Chkalov flight) stimulated that a bit.”Petcoff, 89, was one of a handful of Vancouver-area residents who’d seen the ANT-25 aircraft in 1937 and were able to return for Wednesday’s 75th anniversary ceremony. The event at Pearson Air Museum celebrated the moment when pilot Valery Chkalov, co-pilot Georgy Baidukov and navigator Alexander Belyakov returned to the ground at 8:22 a.m., ending a record-setting flight of 63 hours and 16 minutes. Former State Rep. Val Ogden, center, with Robert Buker, left, and Gayle Rothrock, place flowers at the Transpolar Flight Monument on Wednesday. Buker’s father took him to see the airplane on June 21, 1937, the day after it landed.last_img read more
