Vandals wreck Long Point cottage

LONG POINT – Police advise residents in resort communities to watch out for each other’s property after vandals destroyed the interior of a cottage in Long Point in recent days. The property is located at 82 Old Cut Blvd. Sometime between mid-July and Monday, someone broke in and ripped up the cottage’s interior. As well, a boat with motor in an adjoining boat house was sunk in Long Point Bay.The damage is so bad that owner Edward Dirse isn’t considering repairs. He will either level the cottage and sell the lot or level the cottage and build a new one.“It was targeted once before,” Dirse said at the scene Wednesday. “I wrote it off as kids partying. Now it’s happened again, and they seriously trashed it.”There is damage throughout the interior. This includes broken windows and glass doors, torn up floor boards, a destroyed bed, a bathroom with all fixtures smashed, broken furniture, and gouge marks in the ceiling from what may have been an axe. The walls were also kicked in.The Tilbury craft in the boat house had a motor attached. The motor has been taken to a mechanic to determine if it can be salvaged. A fire extinguisher from the house was emptied in the boat house. Fishing gear was also stolen.“The strange thing is no one heard anything,” Dirse said. The Dirse family is busy this time of year on their farm in Walsingham. Family members were away from the cottage for two weeks and only discovered the damage on Monday.“The OPP want to remind all community residents that – if they observe any suspicious activity – to please contact police immediately,” Const. Ed Sanchuk, spokesperson for the Norfolk OPP, said in a news release.Old Cut Boulevard is densely packed with cottages.
